Bulukumba community has been in contact with the religious teachings of Islam since the beginning of century – 17th AD, which is expected in the year 1605 AD the Islamic religion brought by 3 (three) major scholars (Waliyullah) from the island of Sumatra, each title Dato Tiro (Bulukumba), Dato Ribandang (Makassar), and Dato Patimang (Luwu).

Bulukumba community is known as religious community. When Islam was brought and introduced by a man named Abdul Jawad and titled Al Khatib Maulana Bungsu, several centuries ago, Bulukumba society can accept it with open arms.

Abdul Jawad (other versions of the original name of Nurdin Ariyani) or Al Khatib Maulana Bungsu come to South Sulawesi with two friends, namely: Khatib Makmur better known by the name of Dato ri Bandang, and Khatib Sulaiman better known as Dato Patimang.

The three of them were pupils or students of Pesantren Sunan Giri. Sunan Giri is the name of one of Wali Songo (the nine guardians who spread Islam in Java in the 17th century) and the founder of the kingdom Guru Kedaton, which is located in Gresik, East Java. He was born in 1442 Blambangan year. Sunan Giri has several nicknames, namely Raden Paku, King Satmata, Sultan Abd al-Faqih, Raden ‘Ainul Yaqin and Joko Samudra. He is buried in the village of Giri, Kebomas, Gresik.

In the AD 1600s, Abdul Jawad broadcast Islam di Tiro (Bulukumba) and surrounding areas. The first king in the Tiro kingdom is Launru Daeng Biasa islamicised with titled Karaeng Ambibia.

Launru Daeng Biasa is the fourth grandchild Karaeng Samparaja Daeng Malaja, named Karaeng Sapo Batu was the first king in Tiro. Mali ‘means carried by water currents, siparappe means helping each other not to bring the flow of water, tallang means drowned, while sipahua means helping one another from drowning).

It also shades of morality that underlies the development of the birth of the slogan “Bulukumba Sailing” which began to be socialized in September 1994 and agreed to use in 1996.

Conception of “Sailing” as a development within and outside of moral philosophy which contains enough depth, and have a relationship history, culture, religion and society Bulukumba.

“Berlayar” (Sailing) is an abbreviation of “Bersih Lingkungan Alam Yang Ramah” (Nature Clean Living Environment). The philosophy contained in a slogan seen from three sides of footing, foundation footing historical, cultural and religious foundation.

From the cultural side, Bulukumba has emerged into “modern legends”, in the constellation of national cultural scene.
