The MatahariKu is a wooden cruise ship built to the design of the classic Indonesian freighter the Pinisi. Carefully and professionally equipped and furnished, it offers high standards of comfort and safety, and will unfailingly convert your cruise into an unforgettable adventure.

The MatahariKu was launched in April 2010 and shortly thereafter undertook her maiden test voyage, a long one in mixed weather. Stretched to her limits, she performed outstandingly and the voyage served to introduce the last improvements and further evaluate complete operations.

The ship has achieved what the owner and designers aimed for – a safe, comfortable and pleasing maritime environment on which all the troubles of the busy western world can be forgotten. Luxury is only at arm’s length on the MatahariKu. Delicious snacks, exotic cocktails, classic local dishes and an atmosphere never to be forgotten.

So what does ‘all inclusive’ actually include? All meals, water, soft drinks, coffee and tea, snacks, entrees, and transfers to and from the ship, airport and hotels.

Not included are alcoholic drinks, if you would like we can arrange for these to be on board; airline tickets, hotel costs prior to and after the cruise, and the one transfer from the airport to the port of embarkation. We naturally will make best efforts to retain these prices but small changes may be inevitable.

Ten percent of the cruise charge is payable on booking and the full cruise charge should have been received by us four weeks prior to departure.

30 Meter Smy. Royal Fortuna Phinisi Boat has just completed their building in Tana Beru of Bulukumba South  Sulawesi last year 2011 and now is under 60% complete in Bali Island.

The schooner is custom design and soon will be complete until the owner of Mrs. Jo husband is very illed and need to recover for his health and he has no more time to complete his lovely boat in Indonesia. His wife Jo need only interested and potential buyer and want to sell the boat as soon as possible.

The boat has 10 cylinder engine and hydraulics in complete, cabins is not done yet, deck is still the same after launched, the sail still not fitting, all amenities is not provided but the boat just need a lot of extra work to complete.

Phinisi Boat BuildingLocated at the most southern tip of South Sulawesi’s peninsula, 153 kilometers south of Makassar, lies the district of Bulukumba , holding hidden marvels in its pristine beaches, underwater gardens, and   unique maritime culture. The district is also known as Butta Panrita Lopi or ‘the land of the phinisi schooners” for its long tradition in building these majestic crafts, the pride of the Bugis people.

According to the ancient I La Galigo manuscript, phinisi schooners have been built since the 14th century. These  schooners are mostly crafted  in the area called Tanah Beru, located about 23 kilometers from the capital of Bulukumba, or 176 kilometers from Makassar.

Along the shores of Tanah Beru, you will see tens of dry-docks where phinisi schooners are in various stages of construction. Here the skillful hands of the Bugis with amazing precision, carefully craft the Phinisi that has become the icon of Indonesian seafaring. The Phinisi is built using traditional equipment following exact prescribed traditional techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Its construction does not only involve strength and technique but also – as the locals believe – supernatural powers, for which every stage requires strictly adhered rituals and ceremonies.

Further south, at the most southern tip of the district, about 200 kilometers from Makassar, the secluded white sandy beach, crystal clear calm waters and indulging breeze await at the Tanjung Bira Beach. Its location alone has made it a special place, where the sun rises and sets magnificently along a straight line.  Here the luxurious Amatoa Resort provides magnificent views on the vast spreading white sand,  making this a perfect spot for sunbathing, snorkeling and diving.

Far on the horizon, the scenic view of the island of Selayar adds to the splendor of the beach. While, not too far from shore, the Liukang and Kambing or Goat Islands welcome visitors to step in their pristine environment. There are several boats along the coast that are more than willing to take you to the islands. The seas off Tanjung Bira and around Selayar are also ideal for diving. Around Bira are fringing reefs, but most outstanding by far are the sheer walls at Kambing island, where a stark slab of rock rises out of the ocean between Bira and Selayar. Here the coral cover and schools of fish offer fantastic underwater scenes.

The word “Bulukumba” is believed to be derived from the Bugis phrase “Bulu’ku Mupa”, which loosely translated means “still my mountain”. The name appeared in the 17th century, when a war broke out between two kingdoms of South Sulawesi, namely the kingdoms of Gowa and Bone.  At the time, the ridge of Mount Lompobattang ,  known as “Bengkeng Buki”, -  which means “foot of the hill”, -   was claimed bythe Gowa Kingdom.  The Bone Kingdom, however, refuted the claim and defended the area with all they had.  From this battle came the passionate outcry: ”bulu’ku mupa!” or “still my mountain”. Gradually its pronunciation shifted to cover the entire area of  Bulukumba.

Bulukumba is also the home of a special ethnic group called the Kajang. For centuries they inhabited the interior area of the Kajang regency in an area called Tana Toa, which they regard as having beeen bestowed to them by their ancestors. Until this day, the Kajang still practice age -old traditions and ways of life that teach men to maintain perfect harmony with nature. Living in simplicity, none of the houses have any furniture, electricity, and other modern convenience.The Kajang also wear black as their daily attire.  For to the people of Kajang, modernity deviates from customary rules and ancestral teachings.

Watching the magnificent phinisi schooners being built, enjoying the white beaches, and the splendors below the sea, Bulukumba is  truly worth a visit as you venture into the wonders of South Sulawesi.

The Bugis Phinisi Schooner
When sailing in the Indonesian seas one invariably meets one of these majestic traditional schooners at full sail. These are the Bugis pinisi, – or sometimes written phinisi – that have for centuries plied these waters journeying as far away as Malacca, Burma, Vietnam and Australia. Today one can see these large traditional boats at anchor along the Sunda Kelapa harbor in Jakarta and at the Ujung wharf of Surabaya unloading timber from Kalimantan, or at the Paotere harbor in Makassar, South Sulawesi, or even at the small port of Labuan Bajo on Flores.

The Bugis together with the Mandar, both of South Sulawesi, are master shipbuilders and superb mariners. These pinisi boats have carried the Bugis far across the archipelago and many have further settled on Java, Kalimantan, Sumatra, Papua, and the Nusatenggara islands. The Bugis were not only respected as master seafarers but were also greatly feared as pirates.

In the 18th century when the Dutch colonized their homeland, many aristocrats sailed to Malaya (present day Malaysia) and Kalimantan. The Sultans of Kutai in East Kalimantan and of Johor and Selangor in Malaysia are of Bugis descent. The original Bugis heartland is in Luwu on the Bay of Bone, where in the 13th.and 14th. century thrived a large Bugis kingdom. Here the Bugis great literary work “I La Galigo” was composed that relates the story of the origins of the Bugis in more than 6,000 pages.

The Bugis pinisi of 100 tons to 200 tons today still play a vital role in traditional transport and inter-island trade. In the 19th century Bugis perahus (boats) were loaded with European and Chinese manufactured goods from Singapore carrying these to far away Dobo in the Aru Islands in East Nusatenggara stopping at remote ports along the route. From the Indonesian islands they gathered birds-of-paradise feathers, sandalwood, spices, gold and pepper to sell them at significant profit in Singapore to Chinese and Indian merchants.
Today, the Bugis pinisi carry all sorts of cargo from timber to cement, house tiles, rice, sugar, up to motorcycles and crates of cigarettes to sell these to islanders in the archipelago.

Nowadays also, the Bugis pinisi are refitted to serve as unique traditional live-aboards for divers to pristine locations especially in the eastern Indonesian islands. These sturdy vessels now come complete with cabins, kitchen and toilet facilities to accommodate members of diving expeditions to the Komodo park in Flores and the Raja Ampat national park near Sorong, in West Papua.

The present-day large Bugis pinisi are said to be partly copied from the western schooner of the mid-nineteenth century. The pinisi is a larger version from the former Bugis perahus used, known as the perahu patorani and the padewakang.
The Bugis pinisi today have tall ketch rigs of seven sails, including two topsails and 2 tall masts.
